At last the season was about to begin. Mike Ruddock and Clive Griffiths had got their team into the shape they wanted. It was their team! A full preseason and warm-up games of choice. Plus we had been joined by Chris Latham, Matt and Ben Jones and Hal Luscombe. It should be a great season
Matt Jones warms up with a few kicks to touch Loki continues with his Tommy Cooper impressiona Mat looks to the heavens Whi is THIS man??
Matt Powell getting a few practice kicks away from the base of the scrum One of Saints new recruits, Ben Foden. Although on the bench he would be coming on at some stage and would pose more than just a few problems
One that got away. Dylan Hartley dubbed as a shoe-in for the England spot this season.

A powerful young man of enormous talent and who we released in favour of Chris Fortey. Someone did not spot his potential.

Dylan is bursting with enthusiasm and commitment and always makes an impact in whatever game he plays

It was very nearly time to get the show on the road. The supporters on both sides were in fine form as the battle of the terraces was well underway.

It is always a great day out at Saints, where we are always welcomed even though we have had rthe cheek to win every game at the gardens, so far, would this game go the same way?

Out came the teams to huge cheers.

It almost felt like Sixways!!(kidding)

This was a game Saints HAD to win and a game we would love to win. 4 away points would be a fantastic start to the season

Saints captain leads out his team with such adoraing looks from one of the lucky 2 escorts TT as he always is was ready for this game
Matt Wood takes a final few long breaths as he prepares to do battle And We're off. Matt Jones our new flyhalf gets the gam started with a great drop out.
The ball was missed completely by the catcher as Aleki targeted yet another enormous hit to start the game The Line Out. This season under the new ELV's was going to be a target for defending teams to disrupt. Craig as usual took the ball easily and flipped it to Matt Powell. Saints were through a totally undefended line and sacked him. Disaster No1
Well it continued in the same vein. Saints had found a way to totally nullify the possesion off the line out.

Not as expected by pulling down the catcher as he landed but by stroming through the line and sacking the scrum half.

Worcester were focussed on being in position to take the ball off the catcher as he was dragged to ground.

The double bluf worked  and Worcester had forgotten how to defend a normal line out.

Matt Powell did his best but it was a shambles.

Spencer drops out straight to his countryman Rico Gear who once again looked deeply out of sorts.

Here we see a saints line out. We have 6 in the line and lift 2 jumpers, whilst Saints have only 3. All 6 are out of the game as the ball is thrown over the top where they have 3 extra forwards to drive the ball on. Once again Worcester start giving penalties away like sweets at a German street parade. If this guy could kick we would have been out of the game by half time
If we employ a referee to help coach the players one would presume it would have some benefits.

To have the match referee constantly telling the captain what he is doing wrong, shows just how badly the team was prepared.

Rawlinson was very lucky to stay on the pitch. he was pinged several times for exactly the same thing time and time again.

YOU HAVE TO STAY ON YOUR FEET.

It was clear very early on that Saints were really up for this game as they flew into broken play like dervishes. But like dervishes they new the steps and danced all over the hapless warriors

look at this shambles

No one is in position to lift anyone on either side and the ball drops to Lobbe as the warriors flap around and look on.

The organisation of what was once a potent weapon of the Warriors was dreadful.

Players and coaches need to take a long hard look at this DVD and see what went wrong, accept their own failings and get on with putting it right. There are no excuses.

Greg worked hard and put a huge amount of effort in.

But all effort and little control or direction makes it futile.

It is not just about effort and commitment, about putting your body on the line, it is about doing the right thing at the right time.

On top of the line out problems the front row were taken apart by Saints. two of the strongets and most reliable facets of our game had just disappeared without trace.

It is all right playing high risk running rugby when you have the ball but you first of all have to win the ball and then retain it if you are ever going to apply any pressure on the opposion.

It is an old adage but it still stands the test of time.

Forwards win games and backs decide by how much! Our forwards lost the game today.

As the players came out to play they looked more determined and with at least another 40 minutes to go just 3 points separating the teams it was anyone's game.

Matt Powell looked really determined, maybe this half the forwards give him some sort of platform from which he could release the backs.

So far they had not once run the ball down the line!!

I cannot say much more than we ended last season with the best wingers on the field, I have seen nothing so far that has changed my mind.

This man is a world class winger it is about time he performed for Worcester

Spencer gets the 2nd haf underway
Look at this picture. Ras takes the ball centerfield with 2 saints players storming in. No one is in position to support him or is fast enough to get into position. Result he is driven backwards to withing 10 meters of our goal line. It is only his own strength that saves the day.
Here we have another situation. It looks as if matt is about to get the ball away but he actually gets sacked once again. We have committed 6 players to the ruck Saints have 2. We have not committed their players neither have we provided and protection for Matt. Consequently the Saints forwards are free to attack Matt and force bad ball into our defending threequarters
Craig is 6ft 8ins not 5ft 10ins the ball needs to be so high only Craig can get there A fantastic tackle from Aleki as he turns the ball carrier. In comes Greg Rawlinson but we still lose this ball. We are not physically strong enough.
Look at the difference. The Saints Scrum Half has acres of space to get the ball away and the supporting backrow player is forced to run hard onto the ball.
Here we have a missed tackle by Netalie.

We have 4 players around Spencer but no-one is going in and look behind as the saints supporting backrow will be there long before we get there.

Our backrow play was slow and showed little ability to compete for the ball.

Every time we took a ball into a maul or ruck situation we turned it over. EVERY SINGLE time

A delicate piece of work from Spencer but when faced with a lock you can do what you want This is how to direct your throw in and haw to catch it
Once again we have 4 saints forwards ready to set up and recycle the ball whilst our boys are still on their way
A nice piece of open play which our exalted backs never ever had all day.
Blindly tackling whilst the Saints play heads up rugby

Not a good day at the office, but it can only get better Lutui had a good game and was my man of the match

Matt Jones played well behind a pack in disarray.

Sam and Dale tried hard to rescue the game as did Miles when he eventually got the ball.

I am afraid the forwards have to shoulder the blame for this sad performance
